This learning opportunity is facilitated by your membership staff or service unit volunteer. You will learn about the traditions of Girl Scouting as well as the necessary paperwork, expectations and support available to ensure a successful troop. This is the perfect opportunity to learn detailed information about your service unit. (1.5- to 2-hour course) Orientation to Girl Scouting is appropriate for all adults, from parent to board member, and is required of troop leaders. The course shares the story of how Girl Scouting came to the U.S. and grew to a worldwide sisterhood. You’ll be introduced to the values and beliefs of the organization and the different ways girls can participate. And, you’ll find out how our program builds tomorrow’s leaders. Orientation is available online or by CD. Leadership Essentials is required for Girl Scout leaders. Join us to Discover the three Keys to Leadership, the new Journeys for girls, and learn what we mean by “purposeful leadership.” Connect with other volunteers to create a network of support, and plan how to Take Action with your girls, whatever grade-level and whatever Pathway they follow. You’ll also find out how to tell when your efforts have truly guided the girls to develop new leadership skills. (3-hour course) Be Safe, Be Ready courses are required of an adult before taking a troop overnight at a site where all girls sleep together in an enclosed facility containing flush toilets. No fire building or outdoor cooking (fire or camp stove). These two courses, 1) Outings and Overnights and 2) Girl Planning are available online.
Fire Building and Outdoor Cooking
is required of an adult before the troop attempts these two skills. Learn about
camp stoves, knives, knots, and sanitation. This course lasts six hours and may
be delivered as two shorter courses.
The Overnight Camp Experience
is required of an adult before taking a troop camping where the girls sleep in
smaller groups in tents and cabins. Includes outdoor programs and ceremonies,
practice with tents, tarps, lanterns, and knots. Enjoy campfire activities,
night sounds, and how to partner with girls to plan advanced outdoor
experiences. This is an overnight class that begins after dinner one night and
ends at lunch the next day.
