DEFINITION OF GIRL SCOUT CAMPING:
An experience that provides a creative, educational opportunity in group living in the
out-of-doors. Its purpose is to utilize Girl Scout program, trained leadership, and the
resources of natural surroundings to contribute to each camper's mental, physical, social,
and spiritual growth.
OBJECTIVES OF GIRL SCOUT CAMPING:
1. To Promote the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of every girl and leader.
2. To develop resourcefulness, initiative, self-reliance, and recognition of the worth
and dignity of each individual.
3. To provide opportunities for practice in democratic living.
4. To develop a sense of responsibility, qualities of leadership, and an awareness of
the capabilities of all people.
5. To provide an inner satisfaction, a sense of awe and wonder, and deep enjoyment of
the out-of-doors for both girl and leader.
6. To provide a sense of accomplishment.
7. To stimulate each girl's and leader's awareness of the scope of the natural world.
8. To develop the individual's sense of responsibility for conserving the natural
world.
COUNCIL POLICIES/STANDARDS/PRACTICES:
- Daisy Girl Scouts may not participate in overnight camping. (Standard)
- The adult responsible for taking a troop camping must have completed appropriate outdoor
training. (Policy) This adult is expected to prepare the girls for camping prior to the
experience, accompanying them on the experience and help the girls evaluate the experience
after the event.
- All artifacts found on any Tarheel Triad properties must remain with the Council.

- The possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages on Council property, or possession
or consumption by anyone accompanying Girl Scouts on a girl or troop activity is
prohibited. (Policy)
- The possession or consumption of illegal drugs on Council property or by anyone on a
Girl Scout activity is prohibited. (Policy)
- The possession of unauthorized firearms on Council property or by adults accompanying
Girl Scouts on girl or troop events is prohibited. Authorized firearms include those
approved by the Council Executive Director and those required of law enforcement
officials. (Policy)
- Archery, R.O.P.E.S./climbing/rapelling courses, horseback riding, and waterfront
activities are controlled risk programs. Council approval is required for participation
both on or off Council owned camps. (Standard)
- Council camps are closed on Wednesdays, Thanksgiving and Easter weekends and from
Christmas through New Years. (Practice)
- Adults who smoke may do so only at outdoor fire rings or picnic shelter fireplaces.
Smoking is not allowed in tents, cabins, buildings, on trails, or roads.
Smoking is not permitted in front of girls. All evidence of smoking (butts, etc.)
must be removed from the site along with the garbage. (Practice)
- Access to Council camp roads is limited to provide a protected, safe environment for the
campers. Those vehicles permitted to drive on camp roads must adhere to the 10
m.p.h. speed limit maximum and be very careful of pedestrian traffic. (Practice)
- Camp gates open at 8:00 a.m. and close for night security at 10:00 p.m. (Practice)
