Activities for Daisy Through Junior Girl Scouts

The following are programs being offered at The Learning Center.
Non-Girl Scouts may attend scheduled sessions for an additional $10 to cover the cost of membership dues. To register, download the Council Sponsored Event/Program Registration Form.
Note: troops/groups/individual girls must register at least two weeks ahead of the classes they wish to attend.

Older girls who would like to earn service or leadership hours by assisting with these sessions for Daisies, Brownies, Juniors can contact Sharon Wisell at 369-7426 or swisell@tarheeltriad.org.
We need lots of helping hands with our younger girl programs!

Daisy, Brownie & Junior girls: These programs are for you!

The following programs have been planned for younger Girl Scouts. Girls need to register two weeks in advance of the classes that they want to attend. Class sizes are limited, so registrations are accepted/confirmed on a first come basis.
Daisy classes run from 5-6:30 p.m. and cost $10 per girl. Brownie and Junior classes run from 5-7 p.m. and cost $15 per girl. Registration fees cover supplies, program consultants, and snacks.

Official recognitions (Petals, Try-Its, and Badges) are not provided but can be bought in the Council Shop located at The Learning Center. Daisies
When: Thursday, Feb. 7

What: Make the World a Better Place Petal. This nature workshop is offered by Christi Eley, a certified yoga instructor, teacher, and founder of the Angel Bear Yoga Program. Girls will become more environmentally friendly, and they will learn how animals can teach us positive character traits. Girls will explore their own passions to make a positive difference in the world along with the benefits of healthy living.

Brownies and Juniors

When:  Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008. Activities apply to the Drawing and Painting Badge and Hobbies Try-It.
What: Drawing and Cartooning taught by program consultants from Young Rembrandts. Activities apply to the Drawing and Painting Badge and Hobbies Try-It.

March:

Brownies
When: Thursday, March 20

What: Angel Bear Yoga taught by Christi Eley. Refer to the information for Feb. 7. Activities apply to the Animals Try-It.

Daisies, Brownies, Juniors
When: Thursday, March 27.
Note: The Daisy class will run from 5-6 p.m. and the Brownie/Junior class will run from 6:15-8 p.m.
What: Help Girls Breathe Easier/Asthma Awareness Girl Scout Patch Program taught by Kelley Ritz Kimmery, a health educator with the Alamance County Health Department.

April:

Brownies and Juniors
When: Thursday, April 10

What: Join students from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Music Department and experience an interactive and fun program. Activities will relate to the Making Music Try-It and the Making Music and Music Fan Badges.

Daisies
When: Thursday, April 24

What: A special program presented by Win-Win Resolutions, Inc. educators. Using puppets, theater instructors, and professional counselors, the program focuses on multi cultural awareness, acceptance of diversities, the impact of name calling and teasing, and increases positive communication skills.

Daisies
When: Thursday, May 8

What: Courageous and Strong Petal- Girls will develop new technology skills by using computers, and they will have fun in the process!

Brownies
When: Thursday, May 15.

What: Girls will earn the Computer Smarts Try-It.

Juniors
When: Thursday, May 29
What: All activities that girls complete will relate to the Computer Fun Badge.


Older Girl Programs – Spring 2008
(For Middle and High School Girls)


Campus Caravan: UNCG
Saturday, February 2nd, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
OR
Monday, February 4th, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Wondering about college? Want to learn about what’s out there and what’s available? We’ll take a tour of The University of North Carolina Greensboro, learn about the school and what it has to offer and eat a meal together on campus. We’ll meet at The Learning Center, head over to campus and return to The Learning Center. Girls may choose to attend either session.

Cost: $10/girl for either session (includes transportation to and from UNCG. Girls will need to bring money for their meal on campus.)
Maximum: 12 girls each session


Time Keeps on Tickin'
Monday, February 25th, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Time getting away from you? Or does time fly when you're having fun? Either way, come out and make your own simple, funky clock out of a recycled CD. You'll definitely be able to keep track of time!

Cost: $10/girl
Maximum: 30 girls


On Your Own
Monday, March 10th & Monday, March 17th, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. each evening
Think you've got what it takes to live on your own? Sooner or later, you're going to have to do just that. This program gives you an idea of what being on your own will be like. You'll learn about renting an apartment, the costs of raising a child, how easy it is to get into trouble with credit cards and how to be a savvy grocery shopper. This program completes the Required, Learn, Do and Share components of the online Interest Project “On Your Own.” Girls will attend both nights.

Cost: $10/girl
Maximum: 30 girls

Caving Skill Session with The OC
Thursday, March 6, 2008 at The Learning Center
7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.


Come learn all about the geological wonders that you’ll encounter on our caving trip. We’ll work on Interest Project requirements from Digging Through the Past. You’ll get geared up for The OC Caving Trip later this month.
*Attendance at the Caving Skill Session is not required to attend the Caving Trip; attendance on the Caving Trip is not required to attend the Caving Skill Session.

Cost: $5 per person

To Register: Download and fill out a Council Sponsored Event/Registration form. Deliver form and fees to the council office.

Biking Skill Session with The OC
Thursday, April 3, 2008 at The Learning Center
7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Learn all about bike maintenance and common bike repairs from the experts at REI. This skill session will get you ready for The OC’s upcoming bike trip. Girls don’t need to have their own bike to participate in this Skill Session but they can bring it along if they like. We’ll work on some Interest Project Requirements from Rolling Along.
*Attendance at the Biking Skill Session is not required to attend the Bike Trip; attendance on the Bike Trip is not required to attend the Biking Skill Session.

Cost: $5 per person

Global Girls
Monday, April 7th & Monday, April 14th, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. each evening
OR
Saturday, April 19th, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Women and girls around the world are all a part of an international sisterhood. However, some of our “sisters” are facing challenges and struggles we might not be aware of. These sessions will help you appreciate the challenges they are facing, understand how women around the world are improving their lives, and learn what you can do to help these women. You’ll learn about international women’s and girls’ groups that are helping women, women and men who are doing this work, international laws affecting women and how to use your creative energy to shed light on these situations.
These sessions complete the Required, Learn and Do components of the online Interest Project “Global Girls.” Girls may attend both Monday night sessions on April 7th and April 14th OR the Saturday session on April 19th.

Cost: $10/girl
Maximum: 20 girls each session


Tank Top Tote
Monday, May 12th, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
It's almost summer and you're going to need a tote for all your summer adventures... from the beach to camp. This program will take one of your tank tops and recycle it into a tote bag. Girls will need to bring a tank top to this session.

Cost: $6/girl
Maximum: 30 girls


Fifth Grade Fest 2008: Hollywood Premier
The Fourth Annual Fifth Grade Fest will be held Friday, May 2, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. All fifth-grade girls are invited to come spend the evening like a famous Hollywood starlet! You can walk the red carpet, have the paparazzi snap your photo with your favorite celebrity and score your very own “swag bag.” We’ll finish the evening with a special movie screening at our own movie theater, complete with concession stand for all your favorite movie treats. Come dressed as your favorite celebrity, wear your red-carpet-ready ensemble, or come as you are!
Fifth Grade Fest 2008: Hollywood Premier is a time for you to celebrate your graduation from 5th grade and elementary school and get excited about the adventures that await you in 6th grade and middle school! Currently registered 5th grade Girl Scouts will receive invitations and registration information via mail in March 2008.

The OC (The Outdoor Club)
Where out is in!
Spring 2008

The OC is a great place for girls seeking high adventure and lots of fun! We’ve got something for every girl!

All girls across the council, ages 12 and up are invited to come join the adventure with The OC. Adults, troop leaders and parents are welcome to accompany their girls on The OC trips. Non-Girl Scout friends are welcome to join The OC as well! Attendance at every trip is optional- you can create your own adventure!

Check out the upcoming trips and skill sessions planned with The OC. Details and information about each trip is listed below.

Our new skill sessions will be offered at The Learning Center and will relate to that month’s trip. These skill sessions are a great way to get geared up for The OC trips or just come and gain some new skills. Attendance at each skill session is encouraged but not required for girls attending trips with The OC.

Caving Skill Session with The OC

The OC Caving Trip
Friday, March 28 – Saturday, March 29, 2008


This OC adventure will lead you into a surreal underground world of magnificent natural formations. We’ll explore Worley’s Cave in Tennessee with a skilled cave guide from High Mountain Expeditions out of Boone, NC.

Arrive at The Learning Center by 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Be sure to eat dinner before you arrive. We’ll depart and head up to Dot Perry where we’ll camp for the night. Saturday morning we’ll meet up with our outfitter, head to Tennessee and cave. All meals will be provided on Saturday. We should return to The Learning Center between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Saturday evening.

Cost: $100 per person (includes caving, camping at Dot Perry, all meals on Saturday and transportation.)

Minimum Participants: 8 girls/adults

Biking Skill Session with The OC
Thursday, April 3, 2008 at The Learning Center
7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

The OC Bike Trip
Friday, April 19th – Saturday, April 20th, 2008

Spend this weekend “rolling along” with The OC on our biking journey. We’ll complete some requirements from the Rolling Along Interest Project. *Girls don’t need to have their own bike to participate in this trip.

Arrive at The Learning Center by 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Be sure to eat dinner before you arrive. We’ll depart and head up to Virginia where we’ll camp for the night right outside Damascus. We’ll bike the Virginia Creeper Trail on Saturday. All meals will be provided on Saturday. We should return to The Learning Center between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Saturday evening.

Cost: $100 per person (includes biking, camping, all meals on Saturday and transportation.)

Minimum Participants: 5 girls/adults

Come out and refine your skills on this camping weekend while enjoying the out-of-doors at Keyauwee Program Center. You’ll work on some requirements from Interest Projects such as Camping, Outdoor Survival, Orienteering and Wildlife.
